Coating Failure Troubleshooting — Common Causes in Tropical Climates

Diagnose premature coating failure in Philippine conditions — humidity, salt exposure, poor prep, and incompatible systems — with practical remediation steps.

Tropical climates like the Philippines impose unique stress on coating systems: high humidity, salt aerosol near coasts, intense UV, and rapid temperature swings during storms. Failures that would take years in temperate regions can appear in months if specifications or application miss critical details.

Common Failure Modes

Blistering

Cause: Moisture trapped beneath the coating — often from applying over damp concrete or during rain events.

Prevention: Test substrate moisture; observe weather windows; use appropriate primers like Megabond 6LV on porous concrete.

Delamination

Cause: Inadequate surface preparation — oil, rust, or weak existing coatings left in place.

Prevention: Follow SSPC/ISO prep standards; verify blast profile; remove all non-adherent material.

Rust Breakthrough

Cause: Insufficient total film thickness or wrong system for corrosivity category.

Prevention: Classify environment (C3, C4, C5); specify adequate build coats; inspect at maintenance intervals.

Chalking and Fading

Cause: Epoxy topcoats exposed to direct tropical UV without polyurethane protection.

Prevention: Use Megathane or specified UV-stable finish coats on exterior surfaces.

Softening or Discoloration

Cause: Chemical exposure beyond product resistance limits.

Prevention: Document all chemical contacts during specification; upgrade topcoat chemistry if needed.

Troubleshooting Workflow

  1. Document — photograph failure pattern (random spots vs systematic areas)
  2. History — gather application dates, products used, weather during application
  3. Test — adhesion tests on representative areas
  4. Root cause — prep, product, application, or environment?
  5. Remediation plan — partial repair vs full recoat

When to Call Mega Paint
